Projects created by students in the course “Digital Visual Culture” 2013

The final assignment of the course Digital Visual Culture was in close collaboration with the National Archive that published a large collection of photos of the Dutch photo agency ANEFO on Flickr. Users of Flickr were encouraged to describe the photos by assigning tags. This is a nice example of a crowd source project in which ‘the crowd’ is asked to describe images as a way of overcoming the semantic gap, a term which was crucial for this course.

Since the same images were already tagged by professional archivists at the National Archive students had to compare both tags for their final assignment and present their results as an online enhanced essay. Below is a selection of 4 students projects:
